President Mahama Removes Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from Office

Accra, 1st September 2025 – The Presidency has announced the removal of Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.

According to a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the decision was taken by President John Dramani Mahama in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

The action follows the submission of a petition by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori, and the subsequent report of a Committee established under Article 146(6). After reviewing the petition and evidence, the Committee concluded that acts of misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established against the Chief Justice and recommended her removal from office.

The President, as required under Article 146(9), acted in accordance with the Committee’s recommendation.
