A Plus Fires at NPP: “We Sympathize, But Let’s Be Honest” — A Wake-Up Call After Ablekuma North Violence

Controversial political activist and musician Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has broken his silence on the recent violence at Ablekuma North — and his message to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is as direct as it is damning: “We sympathize, but let’s be honest.”

In a strongly worded statement, A Plus condemned the acts of violence witnessed during the by-election but held the NPP accountable for what he described as years of impunity, abuse of power, and selective justice that have bred the current climate of political unrest.

“This Didn’t Start Today” — A Trail of Political Injustice

According to A Plus, the violent incident involving Hawa Koomson should not be treated as an isolated event. He linked it to a disturbing pattern of political oppression, listing moments when power was allegedly abused under the NPP’s watch:

  • The removal of Charlotte Osei, Ghana’s former EC boss, without benefits.

  • The forced exit of Auditor-General Domelevo, who was praised for his anti-corruption stance.

  • The assault on MP Sam George and the humiliation of Dr. Hannah Bissiw.

  • Internal purges of NPP members who were simply “perceived” as anti-Akufo-Addo.

“You used power not to serve, but to subjugate,” he wrote, emphasizing how opposition voices and even loyal party members were crushed when they disagreed with the establishment.

A Personal Pain: The Killing of Nkatie and Others

A Plus did not hold back from sharing his personal grief — referencing the murder of his friend “Nkatie”, whom he claims was killed by known thugs associated with the late “terrorist of Kasoa” and alleged close associate of Hawa Koomson. The gruesome details paint a chilling picture of what he calls “state-enabled impunity.”

“They shot him and hid his body near the Jei River. His decomposed body was found weeks later… your government was in power, and nothing happened,” he lamented.

He also recalled another alleged murder in Nima during the 2024 elections, accusing the former ruling party of turning a blind eye to rising political violence.

Kennedy, Bryan Acheampong, and Okoe Boye: A Stark Contrast

While condemning the attack on Hawa Koomson, A Plus noted the striking contrast in how other NPP figures like Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Okoe Boye were received warmly at the same venue.

“So why Hawa Koomson?” he asked rhetorically, suggesting that past actions and affiliations may have influenced the crowd’s reaction to her.

“When You Fail to Speak Against Injustice, It Will Locate You”

A Plus drew parallels to the now-suspended Chief Justice, expressing sadness at her suspension but noting that her silence during previous injustices under the Akufo-Addo administration may have contributed to her downfall.

Quoting Martin Niemöller’s famous poem about apathy in the face of oppression, he warned that the seeds of silence eventually bear bitter fruit.

A Word to Today’s Power Holders

In a final caution, A Plus directed his message to the current NDC-led government and the broader political establishment:

“To those in power today, take a cue. Power is temporary. But the consequences of abusing it are not.”

 Final Thoughts

A Plus’ post is more than a political rant — it’s a hard-hitting reflection on how unchecked power, injustice, and silence can spiral into chaos. In a democracy, violence must never be normalized, and accountability should not depend on who is in power.

As Ghana inches closer to the 2024 general elections, voices like his continue to call for justice, transparency, and truth — no matter whose ox is gored.
